Hybrid Hydrogels with Extremely High Stiffness and Toughness

چکیده
The development of hydrogels for cartilage replacement and soft robotics has highlighted a challenge: load-bearing hydrogels need to be both stiff and tough. Several approaches have been reported to improve the toughness of hydrogels, but simultaneously achieving high stiffness and toughness remains difficult. Here we report that alginate-polyacrylamide hydrogels can simultaneously achieve high stiffness and toughness. We combine shortand long-chain alginates to reduce the viscosity of pre-gel solutions, and synthesize homogeneous hydrogels of high ionic crosslink density. The resulting hydrogels can have elastic moduli of ~1 MPa and fracture energies of ~4 kJ m. Furthermore, this approach breaks the inverse relation between stiffness and toughness: while maintaining constant elastic moduli, these hydrogels can achieve fracture energies up to ~16 kJ m. These stiff and tough hydrogels hold promises for the further development as load-bearing materials.

Recent developments in the area of hydrogels promise to greatly expand their scope of applications. Many applications require hydrogels to endure signicant mechanical loads in aggressive environments. Examples range from biomedical applications such as articial cartilage in tissue engineering, to engineering applications such as swellable packers in the oil industry, or articial nerves and m...

Although hydrogels now see widespread use in a host of applications, low fracture toughness and brittleness have limited their more broad use. As a recently described interpenetrating network (IPN) of alginate and polyacrylamide demonstrated a fracture toughness of ≈ 9000 J/m(2), we sought to explore the biocompatibility and maintenance of mechanical properties of these hydrogels in cell cultur...

Hydrogels' applications are usually limited by their weak mechanical properties. Despite recent great progress in developing tough hydrogels, it is still challenging to achieve high values of , toughness and modulus all together in synthetic hydrogels. In this paper, we designed highly stretchable, tough, yet stiff hydrogel composites via a combination of nanoscale hybrid crosslinking and macro...
متن کاملImproving hydrogels' toughness by increasing the dissipative properties of their network.
The weak mechanical performance and fragility of hydrogels limit their application as biomaterials for load bearing applications. The origin of this weakness has been explained by the low resistance to chains breakage composing the hydrogel and to the cracks propagation in the hydrogel submitted to loading conditions. These low resistance and crack propagation were in turn related to an insuffi...

The application of hydrogels as load-bearing biomedical components is often limited by their mechanical properties. Often an attempt to improve a hydrogel's stiffness is accompanied by a loss of toughness and swelling properties. In this work, we show that the addition of nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC) provides a mean to tailor both the swelling and the mechanical properties of the hydrogel. V...
